PTSD Coaching

Repercussions of military service — from training through active duty and combat — can linger in various forms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The Department of Veterans Affairs has responded by developing telehealth services and multiple apps designed “to improve the health of veterans by providing technologies that expand clinical care beyond the traditional office visit.”

And these highly rated free apps are available to everyone, whether you served or not.

For tools to cope with trauma, the VA’s PTSD Coach app offers relaxation skills, positive self-talk, anger management, and other self-help strategies. CPT Coach features cognitive-processing therapy for trauma. For people supporting those with trauma, there’s also the PTSD Family Coach.

And there’s a wide range of others: apps to help you quit smoking or overcome insomnia, plus counseling for couples, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness-meditation tutoring, and more.

Find the VA app website at mobile.va.gov/appstore. (For more on advances in VA medicine, see “How Functional Medicine Came to the Military“.)
