Keto Weight Gain: Why I Gained Weight on Keto

Even after losing 100 pounds with a keto diet, I began experiencing keto weight gain no matter how low I cut carbs. I got to a place where not only was I not losing weight on keto, but I actually regained 50 of the original pounds I lost – putting me back into the obesity category.

So why did I gain weight on keto?

One major reason I stopped losing weight on keto was stress eating.

There are so many links between stress and weight gain. Not only will you gain fat from stress, but the stress fat connection goes much deeper.

Stress makes you fat because it spikes cortisol. And while cortisol and weight gain may not have a direct correlation, cortisol spikes result in cravings for all of the foods that lead to overeating.

This makes weight gain and stress go hand-in-hand, especially if you follow a high fat diet all day, and then overeat carbs at night in response to a stressful day. This physiological response is a big way stress makes you fat.

If you’re considering quitting keto for an eat less move more approach – a high protein diet is the way to go. I quit keto successfully by following a low carb diet during the day, and including more carbs at night. That way, my carb cravings weren’t through the roof during the day, but carbs at night actually help me sleep better.
