Manage Stress With Exercise

Exercise is one of the key components to help manage stress. We all feel stress sometimes in our life as there are a lot of changes that we need to navigate. Some changes can be stressful such as health issues, taking care of loved ones, financial woes, workload, and pressure to do well in school. Stress is not necessarily a bad thing as it can help one to motivate to reach goals, stay alert and increase energy. However, too much stress, or negative stress, can cause an array of health issues. Cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, depression, anxiety, headaches, back and neck pain and sleep problems are all conditions associated with too much stress. Learning how to be aware of your stressors and how to cope is key to managing stress.

Using exercise to manage stress

  1. Get that heart rate up: It has been shown that just 20-30 minutes of aerobic activity (walking, biking, swimming, dancing, etc.) can help you feel calmer during and for several hours after activity.
  1. Take a yoga class: Whether you do a full yoga class or even 15 minutes of chair yoga, you can help increase a feeling of well-being.
  1. Lift some weights: Resistance training helps us to function better and it promotes improved physical and mental health.  Aim for two sessions a week then build from there.
  1. Try Tai Chi: During Tai Chi, you will work on your balance, mobility, and flexibility which will help with relaxation.
  1. Invite others to join you: Whatever exercise you do, finding someone (or even a furry friend!) to join you will make it more fun and increase the chances that you will continue!
